I think it’s kind of interesting to note that Abe’s looking away from Mihashi when Mihashi thinks, “He cares for me.” That one looks at the other without the other noticing conveys the uncommunicative aspect of their relationship and how difficult it is for them to understand each other.

Also, wow. I don’t think I’m ever going to be over just how incredibly codependent they are; I mean, it’s very unlikely that their relationship will ever be (canonically) romantic but platonic or romantic this is probably one of the most well-portrayed mutually codependent relationships ever. As often as we see Mihashi pining/worrying/thinking about Abe and as scary and unhealthy as Mihashi’s devotion is (“Did I do anything to seem unhappy?! When? Where?!!”), it’s not one-sided.

Several times we’ve seen Abe thinking to himself about how Mihashi’s trust in him makes him feel really good, in just about every episode we see Abe trying to protect Mihashi in his own intimidating and insensitive way, and the only person who ever moves Abe to nearly break down crying or actually smile is Mihashi (otherwise, Abe seems to be an apathetic and sometimes malevolent douche all of the time).
